First impressions

The soul of your wine

At Prestige Wine Labels, we understand that the first impression is paramount. A label is more than just an accessory; it is an introduction to the wine inside, inviting people to savour every drop with anticipation.

Thoughtfully designed, it conveys the unique story and character of the wine, setting the stage for the tasting that follows, and making a striking impact from the moment the bottle is first seen.

What shapes a label

Three decisions that do the work

Most of a label's impact comes down to a handful of choices made early. These are the ones worth spending time on.

Stock and finish

Material sets the tone

Textured and uncoated papers read as considered and traditional; clear and metallised films read as modern. Foiling, embossing and spot varnish add depth that a flat print cannot. Practical constraints matter too, since a bottle that will sit in ice needs a stock and adhesive that survive condensation.

Typography

Type carries the voice

Typeface choice signals era, region and price bracket before a single word is read. Legibility at arm's length on a curved surface is the real test, and it is where a lot of otherwise handsome designs fall down. Restraint usually beats ornament.

Compliance

The mandatory elements

Australian wine labels must carry specific information, including alcohol content, standard drinks, volume, allergen declarations, country of origin, lot identification, the supplier's name and street address, and the pregnancy warning label. That last one is a prescribed mark with its own rules on wording, colour and size, so designing with these in mind from the start avoids a redesign late, when the layout is already settled.
